One of the largest towns in Bergen County at 5.65-square-miles and a population of over 14,000, this little community tucked away in the foothills of the Ramapo Mountains may be a short commute away from New York City, but really—who needs it? With some of the most amenities per capita you certainly don't need to go far for a good meal. Or for a good quality of life, for that matter.
Shopping & Dining
Downtown Ramsey consists of 75 clapboard and stucco stores that are about one-third restaurants and include half a dozen hair and nail salons. Still, though, the district maintains some of the business mix of an early 20th-century downtown, with two hardware stores, several tailors, a couple of jewelers, a locksmith and the Ramsey Cinema, which shows first-run movies but is also a popular spot for children's birthday parties. The closest large malls are in Paramus, seven miles to the south. However, residents say they make a special effort to patronize establishments on Main Street.Getting Around
Ramsey has two New Jersey Transit train stations which provide mass transit access to Hoboken Terminal with connections available at Secaucus Junction to Penn Station New York in Midtown Manhattan and other New Jersey Transit lines. Located on Main Street just east of Central Avenue in the borough's downtown area is the Ramsey Main Street station. The Ramsey Route 17 station is a park-and-ride facility and regional commuter hub located along Route 17 South in the northern section of town. Both of these stations are stops along NJ Transit's Main Line and Bergen County Line. Short Line provides bus service along Route 17 to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan.Education
The Ramsey Public School District serves students in pre-K through twelfth grade in five schools. Ramsey High School was the 30th-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 328 schools statewide in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2012 cover story on the state's "Top Public High Schools". Private schools include Academy of St. Paul, a K-8 Roman Catholic school and Don Bosco Preparatory High School, an all-boys Roman Catholic high school for grades 9-12.Community
Ramsey residents enjoy coming together as a community. The Ramsey Farmer's Market provides live music and unique vendors selling locally grown and artisan produced natural products. Throughout the year, the community also hosts events such as the Easter Egg Hunt, Home Run Derby, and the Halloween Parade and Costume Contest.Parks & Recreation
Ramsey Recreation offers a wide variety of programs for all ages as well as many seasonally themed special events. Perhaps the most well-loved facility is the Ramsey Municipal Pool. It has garnered consecutive 'Best of Bergen' awards for it's appeal to families with both older and younger children. Finch Park has a playground, picnic areas, 8 baseball and softball fields, a street hockey rink, and basketball courts. Here they host camp for over four hundred young campers and movie events during the summer. Ramsey Golf and Country Club has an 18-hole golf course, the Lakeside Grille restaurant, swimming pool, picnic area, playground, tennis courts and a banquet room.Resources
