Fall is such a great time of year to get outside and enjoy what our area has to offer. Just this weekend my family and I took a trip up to Minnewaska State Park in the Catskills to do some leaf peeping. If you’re hoping to check off a few things on your fall bucket list before the weather turns cold, here are a few of my favorites:

Leaf Peeping:

Ramapo Reservation – A network of five loop trails, all beginning within a two-mile radius of the parking lot. Panoramic views, a pond, a reservoir and a waterfall. Dogs welcome.

Harriman State Park – With 31 lakes and reservoirs, 200 miles of hiking trails, two beaches, two public camping areas, a network of group camps, miles of streams and scenic roads, and scores of wildlife species, vistas and vantage points, there’s something for everyone at this park.

Walkway Over the Hudson – This linear park spans the Hudson River between the Town of Lloyd in Ulster County and the City of Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County and provides breathtaking, unobstructed 360 degree views of the Hudson River and surrounding scenic valley from 212 feet above.

Halloween Events:

Ridgewood Halloween Maze – The Stewart family of Ridgewood has been building a maze in their own backyard for over 20 years! All are invited to come and give it a try for free at 124 Sheridan Terrace, Ridgewood. The maze is usually open 4-9:00pm on weekdays, and noon to 9:00pm on weekends.

Sleepy Hollow – The legendary Sleepy Hollow, NY is only thirty minutes from central Bergen County. Here you’ll find everything from theater performances depicting the tale of the headless horseman to nightly cemetery tours.

The Great Jack ‘o’ Lantern Blaze – Just north of Sleepy Hollow, you’ll find over 7,000 illuminated jack ‘o’ lanterns on display on the grounds of the Van Cortlandt Manor. It’s a sight not to be missed!

Trunk or Treat – There are numerous locations offering safe trunk or treating for the little ones. You can catch a show, followed by trick or treating in the cafeteria, at RHS New Players Company Trunk or Treat. If you’d prefer to go the more traditional route, Abma’s Farm also offers a trunk or treat event with admission of one bag of candy.

Fall Festivities:

Demarest Farm, Demarest –  Apple & pumpkin picking, hay rides, farmer’s market, petting zoo, haunted orchards, movie nights

Secor Farms, Mahwah – Pumpkin picking, farmer’s market, petting zoo, hay rides, corn maze

Abma’s Farm, Wyckoff – Pumpkin picking, farmer’s market, petting zoo, hay rides, workshops

Warwick Valley, NY – Warwick Valley has become known as the destination for all things fall. With so many u-pick apple orchards, wineries, pumpkin picking and farmer’s markets, you should really just make a weekend of it.
