We moved into our Ridgewood home 17 years ago. Around that same time three other young families moved onto the same block. So that September we decided to host a block party to get to know our neighbors and we’ve continued the tradition every year since. In early fall, we choose a night, we shut down the street and we get to know one another! The kids ride their bikes up and down the block, play with chalk and balls, and most importantly, each other. Some years we have cupcake contests or chili cook-offs, some years we have a DJ or a band, but every year we have an experience that creates memories!

Over time, the dynamic has changed. After all, our daughter was 6 months old when we moved in and she’s 17 now! Babies have been born, families have come and gone, but the tradition continues. Neighbors who have moved away typically return and some years people invite their families, friends, coworkers, etc. Every year it is a wonderful opportunity to get outside, share ideas and opinions, laughs and drinks with neighbors. If your block does not currently partake in this tradition, please consider starting it! I promise, you will not regret it!
